Blog 21: Independent Component 2

LITERAL
(a) I, Catherine Clauss, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.

(b) Mentors Heidi Clauss, and Susan Hodapp along with my Picture This: Using Photography to Teach Science, Math, and Writing article written by Hillary Oswald.

(d) For this independent component I worked with different groups of students complete a variety of technological/ art integrated based assignments.

Assignment 1: Getting used to the Editing Program. Since we had to complete these assignments in class my mentor Heidi Clauss and I felt it was necessary for students to get used to working with the video editing program they would be using so they could complete the other assignments. So for this assignment they were give various Movie trailers to pick from and were told to edit the sound and picture however they wished. Since the purpose of this assignment was to gain an understanding of how to enter different sound effects and music into the video we did not worry too much about them giving us amazing work we just wanted to be sure that they understood how to do it.

Assignment 2: Digital Photo Poem. For this assignment students were given a poem and were told to find pictures online that would represent the different parts of the poem. Then after finding all the pictures they needed they were required to edit all the pictures together along with a voice over made by the students (which stated the poem).

Assignment 3: Digital Photo Mesopotamia rap. For this assignment students were given a song that explained different things about a history lesson about Mesopotamia, and the students had to edit pictures they found online along with the music.

Assignment 4: Stop Motion Films. PSA For this assignment Students had to create their own stop motion/ claymation films that expressed a problem. So Claymation PSA. This helped students prepare for the second Claymation assignment

Assignment 5: Stop Motion Films. Math Problems For this assignment students worked in groups to create their own stop motion/ claymation films that explained the process to solve a math problem n a way so others could watch and then understand what they did. They started by writing a script then creating their scenes and characters with clay and toys, then they took pictures of their sets and props in different positions. They uploaded all of the pictures on to a computer so they could edit it and added voice over explanations along with the edited clips.

INTERPRETIVE
With the world changing everyday, becoming more advanced and technological based, art integration needs to find ways to change along with them. To be able to create art integrated activities that can also use technology is a step forward for art integration. For this component I was able to not only help put these activities together I was also able to help act them out and see the effects they have on the student that perform them. When asked how they felt about these activities, they said they enjoyed the activities. For the student's who did the Digital Photo Poem assignment they said they that by trying to find pictures that would describe the poems they gained a better understanding of what the poems were saying. And fro the students who completed the stop motion films said that by having to think of a way to explain different math problems to other people through pictures was a difficult task but would probably help them in the long run.

There are examples for this project but they did not want to transfer. I will post them when  I get the chance. In the meantime please enjoy the other videos.

EXTRA- So this little film was just an extra one done by one of the students during a back to school night at the school. He worked really hard on it and its kinda cute and funny. Just thought you guys would like to see XD.

APPLIED
This independent component helped me with my senior project by giving me evidence to support most of my essential question's answers. Like my first answer, “The best way to use art as a teaching tool in a middle school class is to improve the first and/or second learning experiences by creating fun interactive learning experiences.” For this answer I needed to make sure that fun interactive/ hands on learning experiences could be created and that the student's who participated in these activities thought so as well. (Which they did. They thought they had fun and definitely believed they learned something from these activities)

Independent Component 2 Plan Approval

(1) Write a description of what you plan on doing for your independent study component.
I plan on working with my mentors to create a variety of different art integrated activities to help teach the 4 main core subjects. (Math, History, Science, English). I also know that most of the activities I create can be used or altered for more than one subject, maybe all four, so I can will alter the activities in that way as well. I will also be creating a rubric for each activity and for some of the simpler ones I will create an example.
(2) Describe in detail how you think your plan will meet the 30 hours work requirement.
I think this will make my 30 hour requirement because creating a good activity that would catch a student’s attention and have an equal balance of content is hard, then add a rubric plus the possible example of what the finished activity could look like, and the possibility that the activities could be used for all four of the core subjects I will be using that is already hours of work. Then add the fact that I will be doing more than one activity so I should have no problem reaching the 30 hour work requirement.
(3) How does your independent study component relate to your working EQ?
My whole project is based off of mixing art and school in a way that will both teach and engage a student in a fun, and hands on experience. So by working to create activities to actually fulfill this goal I will be learning a lot of what I need to make my senior project a success.

Independent Component 1

   LITERAL
(a) I, Catherine Renee Clauss, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.
(b) Heidi Clauss (will send contact info via email)
(c) This is the link to my Independent Component log https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlJQ5qIWkJRzdDBiNTJQMmdKS0NaRk9DeUhCdk54Q0E#gid=0
   (d) For my Independent Component 1 I created multiple art integrated activities for the four main core subjects with my mentor along with a rubric and examples of what each assignment should look like.
   INTERPRETIVE
My whole senior project is based on trying to find the best way to integrate art into the everyday core curriculum. Because I worked to create multiple example of art integrated activities for all four of the major core subjects I really had to work and think of the best ways to make these activities work in a way that was fun and educational. I also discovered how hard  it is to create a rubric for an assignment. (P.S. it’s really hard.)(I will provide evidence of my work at 8:00 a.m.  in class in a neat little folder because I have no means of transferring my photos to the blog.)
   APPLIED
My essential question is “What is the best way to use art as a teaching tool in middle school?” So by looking at so many different activities (with and without art) I was able to really think and get an  idea of what I needed to answer my essential question.

Here is the work I did

Senior Project Update

(1) What are you currently doing in your independent component?

I am currently looking at different types of art project ideas and looking to see which ones I could use for my lesson plan.

(2) What is a recent piece of research (article, interview, or audio-visual) that have you reviewed you would say was significant in helping you understand where to go next in your senior project? The piece of research should be something you reviewed in November. Please explain what you learned and where are you going next because of this piece of research.

I recently read an online article called Without the arts, education's grade is Incomplete By Jeffrey T. Schnapp. In this article Mr. Schnapp talks about how you can find art in many of the core subjects in school, yet we are getting rid of arts in general. He also states that too little art could diminish a child's learning, and by controlling it much could create terrible outcomes. This helps me get an idea of what could happen if art continues to be taken out of school. I learned that I need to watch out for how I teach art. I also learned that I may want to look for alternative ways to pay for art programs and more look up different ways to incorporate art into a core lesson plan for my independent component. (Stated above)

(3) Provide evidence from your independent component or the piece of research as something you recently did.  For example, a photo of something you working on for your independent component or your notes from the video you watched.

Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

CONTENT:
  1. Write a description of what you plan on doing for your independent study component.
For my Independent Study Component I will be putting together a web site, or blog for teachers to look at that has Ideas on how to use Art Integration (or Art in Education) in their classrooms.
  1. Describe in detail how you think your plan will meet the 30 hours work requirement.
I think that creating this web site, or blog will meet the 30 hours work requirement because it would be something that I must maintain in order to help other teachers. It also gives me a chance to review what my mentor has taught me and share it with others. I might also be able to get comments and advise from other teachers in different areas.
  1. How does your independent study component relate to your working EQ?
My working EQ at the moment is “What is the best way to use art as a teaching tool in middle schools?” So my Independent Study component relates to my working EQ because the web site or blog will be taking what I learn about using art as a teaching tool and sharing it with others.
